Can’t afford to hire an Interior Designer?  Don’t want expensive renovation work done?

Don’t despair – there are some simple rules to follow if you want to update a room but don’t have a lot of money to spend.

Consider the space – have you accumulated a lot of “stuff”?  Be ruthless, de-clutter, get rid of things. Get rid of any big bulky furniture especially if it is in a dark wood, you will be surprised at all the floor space you have acquired.

Windows are often overlooked and are really important. They are the eyes out onto the world and by having big heavy curtains, you are cutting out the light and restricting the view to that outside world. Replace them with blinds sheers and panels, it will give the room a more airy feel and blinds are cheaper than curtains, so it really is a win-win.

Lighting is so often just forgotten but how a room is lit is the most important thing. I have seen a good design ruined by bad lighting. Place tall floor lamps in dark corners, if you can replace your ceiling fittings for new ones, then do it. Put in some table lamps, not just one, a few. Once the space is properly lit it will be transformed.

Obviously, a fresh coat of paint on walls and architraves is a must if you want to freshen a room but think about the whole scheme, try and tie it all together. Consider wallpaper or wall covering even on a small wall such as a chimney breast, it will give a focal point to the room. There is so much choice out there and it doesn’t need to cost a lot.

If you can afford to change the flooring, change to a hard flooring such as wood or tiles and use rugs strategically placed to liven up the room. It will make the room look bigger and updated if you can’t afford to do this get the carpet professionally cleaned.

All easy things without the costly building work. If you still struggle to tie everything together why not purchase an hour’s consultation from your Interior Designer – they will make sure your choices will work together, offer suggestions and stop the costly mistakes. Money well spent.
